A 1930s Semi – Our New Home

Just before Christmas we signed the contract for our very first own home. We have been house hunting since August, and at the beginning of October, after a number of house viewings, we found the one that had potential to become our home. It ticked all our boxes and we put an offer in.

Just after Christmas we were handed the keys and moved in. We had the house surveyed after the offer had been accepted, so we knew that it was structurally sound with no major issues, but the inside still needed to be brought up to date.

So what did we go for? A 3-bedroom semi-detached house, only 10-15 minutes’ walk from an area just outside of Manchester that we like. There’s a few restaurants, shops, a couple of pubs and cafés.

The survey estimated the house to be built in the 1930’s, and unfortunately, it seems to have been a victim of generations of poor DIY. It is certainly liveable, but we have undoubtedly given ourselves a very long to-to list.

The layout is fairly typical for a 1930s house. It consists of a downstairs hallway that leads into a good sized living room and a kitchen with an adjoining dining room. At the back of the dining room there is a small bathroom and utility room. The living room has patio doors leading out to the garden.

Upstairs, there’s two double bedrooms, a bathroom and a small room that we will use as a an office and work space. There’s also a big, not yet converted, loft.

This blog will help us document our progress, so make sure to bookmark for your dose of home inspiration and DIY attempts. Expect plenty of photos, a few How-to-Guides and some frustration. Welcome to My Manchester Home!
